Your Filter Is the Engine Behind a Clean Pool

Your pool filter runs continuously, trapping dirt, debris, bacteria, and contaminants before they cloud your water or cause health problems. But filters have a limit — and once they're clogged or worn, they stop doing their job. A dirty filter means dirty water, increased chemical consumption, and unnecessary strain on your pump and equipment. NTS Pool Services provides professional filter cleaning for Fresno homeowners and commercial properties, keeping your system running efficiently and your water consistently clear.

Not sure which filter you have? No problem! Our technicians identify and service all standard residential and commercial pool filter systems.

We Service All Three Major Filter Types

Cartridge filters

The most common residential pool filter. Cartridges trap fine particles and should be cleaned every 2–4 months depending on pool usage and bather load. We remove, rinse, inspect, and reinstall your cartridge, as well as advise you when it's time for a replacement.

Recommended: every 2–4 months

Sand filters

Sand filters work by passing water through a bed of filter sand that captures debris. They require regular backwashing to maintain pressure and flow. Sand should be fully replaced every 3–5 years. We backwash, inspect laterals, and assess sand condition on every service visit.

DE filters (diatomaceous earth)

DE filters offer the finest filtration of any pool filter type, capable of capturing particles as small as 2–5 microns. They require periodic backwashing and a full teardown and cleaning 1–2 times per year. We disassemble, clean the grids, inspect for tears, and recharge with fresh DE powder.

Full cleaning: 1–2 times per year

Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning Now

Don't wait for a full breakdown. Your pool is telling you when the filter needs attention. Here's what to look for:

High filter pressure

A pressure gauge reading 8–10 psi above your clean starting pressure is the most reliable indicator that your filter needs cleaning.

Algae keeps coming back

Recurring algae blooms are often a filter problem. A dirty filter can't circulate water or hold treated chemicals effectively enough to prevent regrowth.

Cloudy or dull water

If your water looks hazy despite balanced chemistry, your filter likely isn't capturing fine particles effectively anymore.

Even if your pool looks fine, filters should be inspected and cleaned on a regular schedule, especially during Fresno's heavy swim season.

Weak return flow

Low water pressure at the return jets means your clogged filter is restricting flow and forcing your pump to work harder than it should.

Pump is running hot or loud

A pump working against a clogged filter runs hotter and louder than normal, a warning sign that can lead to costly equipment failure if ignored.

Noticing any of these? Don't wait. A clogged filter only gets harder on your equipment over time. Call NTS Pool Services today, and we'll take care of it.

Fresno Filters Work Harder Than Most

Central Valley dust storms, airborne debris, and Fresno's long swim season put filters under more pressure than pools in cooler or less dusty climates. Combined with the area's hard water—which deposits calcium and minerals directly into filter media—Fresno pool filters clog faster and need cleaning more frequently than the national average. Staying on top of filter maintenance here isn't just good practice, it's essential for protecting your equipment and keeping your water clean through the long summer.
